We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mark Fairhurst, a long standing supporter, who recently completed a 3.8km epic swim in recognition of his grandson, Reece.
Mark told us, “I agreed to attempt the Derwent water 3.8k epic swim approximately 12 months before the swim date which was the 5th of June 2016, and then decided to do the swim for Reece’s charity, Myotubular trust. I was fully expecting Reece to be there on the day supporting me, but tragically Reece passed away a week before the swim. I decided my swim would go ahead; my thinking was Reece was a real fighter and all the battles he won during his short life would make this swim easy – all I had to do was think of Reece.
On the day of the swim it was an early morning drive up to the Lake District in the water for 10 am. I did the swim with a good pal of mine, John Green, who is also my scuba diving buddy and someone I know I can trust. We could not have asked for a nicer day and the support from our family and friends was absolutely fantastic. Once in the water, which was nice and warm, I just put my head down and thought of Reece. One thing I did learn was do not get emotional while swimming – it makes you swallow water so I had to quickly compose myself.
In no time I was at the finishing line but I must admit I thought it would never come. It’s my pleasure to try and raise money for this fantastic charity and I look forward to doing more in the future”.
We are so grateful to Mark for his continued support in memory of lovely Reece.
Thank you and congratulations.
