On Friday 8th February, despite horrid weather, a crowd of hardy London insurance market runners sacrificed their lunch break to support Myotubular Trust by running either 5k or 10k.
Katy Beechy, Programme Director at Texel Foundation, told us, “At the start of the year we realised that we might not be the only ones looking to get fit after the festive period, so decided to see if others in our industry would be interested in joining us for a lunchtime run near work.
Coupled with that, we thought it would be a good opportunity to raise funds and awareness for some of our charity partners, especially those which focus on health and wellbeing.
We were overwhelmed by the response and now arrange charity runs every couple of months, usually on a Thursday or Friday lunchtime. We pick a charity partner and suggest that participants donate at least £20. We then send out maps for a 5km and 10km route and arrange a set off time. We also book an area at a local restaurant, where the runners meet up for drinks afterwards. It’s a great way to catch up, keep fit and do good – all in the space of your lunch hour!
And one of the runners said, “Sometimes it’s difficult to always ask friends and relatives to sponsor you for charitable events. Here, if every participant sponsors themselves for an activity we all do normally for free, it’s a great way to raise money for a worthy cause whilst being able to catch up at the same time”
Immense thanks to Texel Foundation for their continued support, and to the many runners who supported the run. Thank you all and good luck with future runs too!
