The following case report (‘Arrhythmias in XLMTM’ Pons Espinal et al, 2023), looked at heart rhythms in two patients with X linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM). The report suggests that cardiac involvement has not been previously been described in this condition, and in contrast to other types of congenital myopathy, but that abnormal heart rhythms in XLMTM cannot be ruled out.

Heart rhythm disorders may be related to breathing impairment, associated to altered respiratory dynamics, respiratory muscle weakness and mismanagement of secretions. In conclusion, the report also suggests that episodes of heart rhythm disturbances, that may be fatal, can be minimised by optimising the management of airway viability and respiratory support.
